MULTIGENERATIONAL INNOVATIONS – Get involved!
The OSC is recruiting a planning team to kick-start an exciting project, "Multigenerational Innovations", a program to ignite minds of all ages! This program will bring together older adults to work together with teens to create animatronic and robotic exhibits for display at the centre. This program’s goal is to bring generations together to share their knowledge and skills, and engage today's youth in science.
We are looking for enthusiastic adults to assist us in all aspects of this innovative program. Interested volunteers can contact Paula at the Okanagan Science Centre at 250-545-3644 or by email at plambert@okscience.ca for more information.
SCIENCE IN SOCIETY SPEAKER SERIES
This talk is part of an ongoing Science and Technology public presentation series hosted jointly by Okanagan College and the Okanagan Science Centre.
Dr. Nancy Turner - “Not Just Any Old Place”: Ethnoecology in a Changing World Monday, March 15 @ 7:30pm at the Okanagan College Lecture Theatre, Vernon
Admission: $5 in advance or $7 at the door (tickets available at the OSC)
In Northwestern North America, the complex knowledge systems of indigenous peoples can convey critically important understandings of humans’ reliance on local ecosystems, and of our escalating impacts on the life of the planet. The rich tapestry of biological diversity and cultural values is reflected in language, knowledge, practices and beliefs of indigenous peoples throughout the region.
The subtle and special knowledge of very special places and environments may be gone forever. Opportunities for younger people to learn this vital knowledge and a sense of place have also diminished, and this is of great concern to elders and knowledge holders. Ethnoecology can raise awareness of this issue and help reinforce traditional knowledge systems. It can serve local communities through collaborative research that respects indigenous approaches and knowledge about nature, culture and place and helps to restore and renew it for future generations.
Dr. Nancy Turner is an ethnobotanist, ethnoecologist, and professor in the School of Environmental Studies, University of Victoria. She is the author of The Earth's Blanket and Food Plants of Interior First Peoples.
