The Okanagan Science Centre (OSC) is looking for enthusiastic, creative, and organized individuals to join our Summer of Science 2019 team! Help us introduce the wonders of science to all ages through camps, public events, activities, and demonstrations throughout the community.

Program Coordinator Positions

Program Coordinator for Summer Camps (Job Posting #1)

$15.50/hour, 35 hours per week until the end of June / 40 hours per week in July and August

The Camp Program Coordinator will be responsible for the organization, delivery, and supervision of all activities, supplies, camp assistants, and volunteers pertaining to summer camps.

Program Coordinator for Outreach (Job Posting #2)

$15.50/hour, 35 hours/week

The Outreach Program Coordinator will be responsible for the organization and delivery of all activities and supplies pertaining to public programs, including: group programs, birthday parties, and family events.

The Outreach Program Coordinator will be the primary outreach person for the Okanagan Science Centre, and will deliver science programs at festivals, events, and organizations throughout the Okanagan, as well as at the Okanagan Science Centre. The Outreach Program Coordinator will have supervisory responsibilities of equipment, supplies, assistants, and volunteers pertaining to outreach activities.

Additionally, the Outreach Program Coordinator will play an active role in developing the marketing and social media presence for outreach programs and events.

In addition to the primary duties listed above, both Program Coordinator positions may perform any or all of the following:

  • Administrative duties (reception, till operations, filing, etc.)

  • Gallery attendant duties

  • Working on exhibits if necessary

  • Cleaning as is necessary

  • Other Science Centre tasks as necessary

These positions are funded in part by the Canada Summer Jobs program, which requires anyone hired

  • Is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) as of the start of employment;

  • Is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Protection Act; and

  • Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.

Ideal candidates for Program Coordinator positions will be education or science students. They will

  • Be reliable, organized, and well prepared

  • Have experience working with youth

  • Be flexible and able to adapt well to changing situations

  • Be able to communicate scientific ideas and concepts to a wide range of levels and audiences

  • Be meticulous and seek excellence in all tasks

  • Be outgoing and creative

  • Be able to motivate and excite audiences

  • Demonstrate strong leadership abilities and inter-personal skills

  • Be able to represent the OSC with a high degree of professionalism and enthusiasm

  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Provide a clean Driver’s Abstract

  • Provide a successful Criminal Record Check

  • Have access to a vehicle

  • Have first aid certification – either licensed or a plan to become licensed before camps start

Evaluation of applications for Coordinator positions will start on May 13, 2019 and will continue until the positions are filled. Anticipated start date is May 28, 2019.

End date for the Coordinator Positions will be on or about August 31, 2019.

Program Assistant Positions

Program Assistants (Job Postings #3, #4, and #5) – 3 positions available

$13.85/hour, 35 hours/week

Program Assistants will be responsible for an array of duties, such as:

  • Working in summer camps

  • Delivering outreach activities

  • Delivering public programs (family activities, birthday parties, special group programs, etc)

  • Administrative duties (reception, till operations, filing, etc.)

  • Gallery attendant duties

  • Working on exhibits if necessary

  • Cleaning as is necessary

Preferred candidates for all assistant positions will be education or science students, and will:

  • Be reliable and well prepared

  • Have experience working with youth

  • Be able to communicate ideas and scientific concepts to a wide range of levels and audiences

  • Be meticulous and seek excellence in all tasks

  • Be outgoing and creative

  • Be able to motivate and excite audiences

  • Be able to represent the OSC with a high degree of professionalism and enthusiasm

  • Have first aid certification – either licensed or a plan to become licensed before camps start

  • Provide a successful Criminal Record Check

Evaluation of applications for Program Assistant positions will start on May 28, 2019 and will continue until the positions are filled. Anticipated start date is June 17, 2019. (A later start day may be arranged for a successful candidate who is in high school.)

End date for the Assistant Positions will be on or about August 31, 2019.
